USD 6.83 million) subsidy* to support exports of certain food products in the fiscal year 2023-2024 (1 April to 31 March). The subsidy for 2023-2024 is lower than the JPY 5.1 billion (approx. The support will be provided as a subsidy to incentivise exports of goods identified under the agricultural export expansion strategy approved in November 2020. Financial support will be provided for costs related to market research, establishing Japanese brands in foreign markets, research on common industry issues relating to Japanese exports, sales development, demonstration and exhibitions, research in industry regulations and dissemination, certification cost, hiring of experts for export procedures or negotiations, etc. The strategy has identified 27 Japanese products that have a competitive advantage in export markets. static: During 2013, the government of Japan increased the average tariff rate of 8 six-digit HS code(s) when compared to the previous year available in the WTO Tariff Download Facility. The new tariffs only affect the GSP tariff regime. The WTO Tariff Download Facility 'contains comprehensive information on Most- Favoured-Nation (MFN) applied and bound tariffs at the standard codes of the Harmonized System (HS) for all WTO Members. When available, it also provides data at the HS subheading level on non-MFN applied tariff regimes which a country grants to its export partners. This information is sourced from submissions made to the WTO Integrated Data Base (IDB) for applied tariffs and imports and from the Consolidated Tariff Schedules (CTS) database for the bound duties of all WTO Members.'

static: On 8 December 2012, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries decided to ban imports of beef from Brazil because of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BCE) in Brazilian cattle. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) ran tests on a 13-years-old female cow that died in the state of Parana in December 2010 and did not confirm the disease. What the OIE found is instead the presence of a protein, currently believed to cause the disease, but the animal died for other causes and it is estimated that it is unlikely that the disease would have developed, had the animal not died. As a result, the OIE continues to qualify Brazil as a country with 'Negligible BSE risk', whereas Japan is actually considered a country with 'Controlled BSE risk'. Given the official results of the investigation on Brazilian cattle, there appears not to be an internationally-recognized health safety ground for the ban of Brazilian beef.
